Werewolf Erotica, She Wrote – Press Release

Werewolf Erotica, She Wrote

“Brilliantly-named and wickedly-funny” The Latest ****

When a Californian prisoner requested Mathilda Gregory’s werewolf erotica, a court had to decide whether her work had literary merit.

Based on a true story. Except the bits with werewolves.

Werewolf Erotica, She Wrote is a new show from Mathilda Gregory, a comedy writer and performer who once stopped paying attention to her career long enough to write 6 erotica novels. One of them won an award and three of them were about sexy, sexy werewolves.

Gregory was the winner of the BBC’s Laughing Stock Competition in 2011, was named a Funny Women One to Watch in 2013 and was Writer of the Year at the Erotic Awards in 2007. She is a regular contributor to The Guardian and is developing a sitcom with BBC Radio Comedy.

Gregory’s werewolf erotica books became the centre of a bizarre legal battle when a Californian convict went to court to contest the decision not to allow him to read them.

This show is about the resulting extraordinary, deadpan investigation into whether a series of werewolf erotica novels had sufficient literary merit to be allowed behind bars. An investigation which resulted in a book review like no other, when the Judge reported:

There are also a great number of graphic sexual encounters, one per chapter through most of the book, including detailed descriptions of intercourse, sodomy, voyeurism, exhibitionism, and ménage à trois. Semen is mentioned.

Isn’t a legally binding book review every author’s dream?

The story received national and international media attention and was reported in The Guardian, The Wire “Prisoners free to read as much werewolf erotica as they want’, Salon, NPR, Time “Court considers an inmate’s love of literary lycanthropic lust”, The Independent and The New York Times “A brush with the wilder side of erotic fiction”.

31 July – 24 August (not 18), 10:45pm (1hr)
